Few days back, I got chance to join the webinar on HPE NextGen Application Lifecycle Management (ALM). This was held on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 and was mainly focused on introducing the Next Generation of ALM and the announcement of HPE ALM Beta. The way HP has improved its most of the product to fit into the current market trends, it’s really interesting to look at, and this is what forced me into attending the webinar and writing this post.Recently we have seen LeanFT, the improvements and capabilities that HPE has included.

In this post we are discussing about the recent HPE ALM Beta Release

Essentially, HPE ALM beta is full of rich functionalities, satisfying all the demands for technology users across the globe. It will be interesting to see that how easily it will help application teams to faster delivery keeping the quality high.

Why another ALM?

HPE ALM has been designed keeping all the new technology/development trends in center. It addresses almost all the challenges on the way towards DevOps and Agile methodologies. In this version, HPE software is introducing a new set of HPE ALM capabilities that represents the next generation. The capabilities that will help applications teams to plan, define, build, test, track, and accelerate delivery of high-quality applications.

What’s New in HPE ALM?

Support for Common Platform and Release Pipeline – HPE ALM will now support both type of organizations or teams which require very little development process and happy with what are they are achieving. And for the organizations which are into faster development and regular delivery model, involved into Agile or concepts like continuous delivery, DevOps etc. HPE ALM now works with GIT (for source control) and Jenkins (Continuous Integration), however HPE has kept it open platform and enabled the possibility of connectivity with other tools.

Rich Interface – HPE ALM is now with a rich interface and it’s completely different than what we used to see till now. Initially, you might need some time to get yourself familiarize with. There are no earlier modules such as Test plan, test lab etc. It has five main modules at screen – Dashboard, Backlog, Application Modules, Pipelines and Defects. This modules help in easier plan and execute tests.
 

Dashboard enables you to view the status and progress of the application. It has different widgets to include as per your need and configure.

Backlog is a place where you can view the features, defects and do the planning of work related to quality.

 

Application Module relates to the ongoing structure of the application. It includes all the delivered features as well as in progress and planned features as well. With Application Module you will be able to relate the defects with the application area. This will give a complete picture of what is going on in each phases of the application life-cycle. This module will be helpful enabling DevOps. You can get an aggregated view of the overview application here.

 

Pipeline gives a better view of the continuous integration whether its with Jenkins and any other CI tools.

 

Defects module is to view all the defects for the application with all different filtering capabilities.

Integrated Agile user Stories -The HPE ALM beta release has integrated the Agile user stories and backlog management directly into the ALM software platform. With this, the teams can quickly document the business needs and map it to supporting artifacts in the software development life-cycle, such as defects or tests

Ability to write test cases in Traditional as well Gherkin tests – HPE ALM beta release now provides the ability for teams to author tests using Gherkin, which assists in the conversion of automated scripts and manages the execution of your test suites. Whether you’re planning your tests within the context of a continuous integration pipeline or executing regression tests on the fly, with the HPE ALM software you can view aggregated quality within the context of your entire application.You can create a relationship with the test and the user stories.

Dashboard and Defect Tracking – it’s quick and easy. Customizable reports, graphs, and dashboards help the team stay on top of critical items and with prioritization

      The beta version of nextgen ALM seems to be more faster as compare to ALM but once it is live then we will be able to say anything about it.
